California

Posted: 5th September 2011 by Sam in Uncategorized

My Field Ecology Class took a field trip to California this spring. We visited one of the most beautiful places on Earth, Yosemite National Park, so needless to say, I took a few pictures. I have many more, of Yosemite, San Francisco and McClures Beach, which I shot on 35mm, and need to digitize to get up here (funds allowing).

One Hour in my Backyard.

Stuck at home with no car, I thought I’d go for a walk with the dog and a camera. It was lightly raining and overcast, so the light was wonderfully diffuse, with everything wet and reflective. All photos were taken with my Canon digital body, and an old Tamron 24mm F2.5, which is quite soft and dreamy when wide open, which is how most of these were taken.

I’ve got a lot of photos and videos to upload, hopefully I can catch up on that this weekend.

I made this vide for a performance our school German club has every year, called Spassaben (Fun Night). This year’s was unfortunately the last, due to the retiring of our much loved german teacher, Frau Springstead. While this video doesn’t truly convey the atmosphere of the event, it is my effort to preserve a bit of the feeling for future years, for myself and for others.

Band Jam 2010

Band Jam is an annual performance put on by the Wisconsin Heights band in the fall, after the football season ends. We showcase a selection favorite pep band songs, and perform the music we used in our field show during football games. Under the suggestion of the talented Mr. Jacob Bicknase, I made a video last year. Designed to accompany a song he composed for the drumline, it featured the percussionists.
We got a positive response at the showing, and decided to make a movie for this years showing as well. It was a little differently formatted, there was no drumline performance to accompany the video. We ended up making an intro, of sorts, to the entire Band’s performance. Our music for the field show this year was all from Batman movies and TV shows, So I chose a pseudo-superhero theme for the video. Here is the film, be sure to check out the blooper reel below. Enjoy!

UPDATE: After screening this video at Band Jam, I submitted it to both the Green Mountain Film Festival, and the Wisconsin Youth Media Festival. I won “Best Drama” at the GMFF, And “Best Original Work” at the WYMF.
As part of Winning the WYMF, I was interviewed by Charles Monroe-Kane, the host of the Wisconsin Public Television show “Director’s Cut” You can view the interview below, and check out the GMFF in the link. Big thanks to all the people involved in putting the festivals together, making it possible for me to win such awards.

EDIT: You can see the video from the 2009 performance Here

A Collection of Portraits.

Posted: 19th March 2011 by Sam in Photos

This is a collection of my favorite portraits that I have shot in my spare time, not for hire, that wouldn’t really be shown anywhere else. I am always sticking a camera in my friend’s faces, so the gallery is a constant work in progress.

Chocolates From Ben.

Trying some food photography, on some delicious truffles my brother made over break.

Lighting was done with a flash through umbrella, about two feet away and angled, and a fill flash bounced off the ceiling.
